Please excuse the mess, I'm in the process of revamping the genetic pages, Thanks
Welcome to our Holland / American Fuzzy lop color genetics. Here you will find info and pictures on the different varieties of the Holland lop and Fuzzy Lop, recongized and not. This page is still in progress. The hollandlop and fuzzy lop both come in a variety of colors so I have broken it down by groups on phenotype ( how they look). Each variety has a holland and fuzzy version shown. A good rule is to bred rabbits in the same color group. Animals shown for color purposes and not type. This page is very picture intense and might take a while to load.
Genetics: Each variety has it geneotype shown also. In discussing genetics, genes are reffered to by letters of the alphabet. A pair of genes always uses the same letter. Dominant genes are repesented by capitals, and recessive genes are repersented by lower case. In rabbit color genetics we will refer to mostly 5 gene series. These include the Agouti gene ( A, at,a ), the Base color Series (B,b), Color gene series ( C,chd, chl, ch,c), the Dilution gene series (D,d) and the Extension gene series (E,ej,e). The _ means for a missing equally dominant or less dominant gene, you will have to look at the parents to determine. There are 144 possible color coat possiblities that we know of.
PAGE 1 Non Agouti ~ Self Group | Broken Group | Shaded Group | Pointed
PAGE 2 Agouti ~ Agouti Group | Wide Band Group| Tan Pattern Group| Ticked Group |
Self Group (Non-Agouti)
The self group consists of black, blue, chocolate, and lilac. Also rew and bew fall into the self group but have to be bred a certain way. Self is to have the same color over the entire body including feet, tail and ears.
Genetics: The non-agouti gene (aa) prevents the yellow band on the hairshaft to produce the characteristic agouti type marking resulting in a solid or self colored rabbit. Out of two self rabbits (aa),(aa) you can not get an agouti. Example: You can not get a Chestnut out of a true black and tort.

Color at birth: Completely chocolate, belly might appear pink but will turn Chocolate in 4 days.
5 day old chocolate right
Genetics: The recessive (dd) form dilutes whatever pigmentation would produced by the other genes so that it changes a black rabbit (aaB_C_D_E_) into a blue rabbit (aaB_C_dd_E); a Chocolate (aabbC_D_E_) into a lilac (aabbC-dd-E) and a Chestnut (A_B_C_D_E_) in to an Opal (A_B_C_ddE_).
Blue
aaB_C_ddE_

Surface color: Rich, dark Blue
Undercolor: medium blue
Eyes:Blue-gray
Blues can vary on how dark they are. The darker the better. Lighter blues are more prone for lighter toenail color, you want dark toenails.

Genetics:(cc)or the albino gene is the most recessive out of the C series of genes thus it covers all color, including brokens. So you could have a black rabbit with (cc) and it would look like a rew but breed like a black. It's like throwing a white sheet over the rabbit you can't see the color but you know it is there.
Rew *Ruby-Eyed White*
----cc----

Surface color: Pure White
Undercolor: Pure White
Eyes: ruby red with a lighter pink color in the iris.
Breeding:Treat it as the color it is hiding.

Sugden's Ruby

Color at birth: Kit looks pink till fur comes in White. Red eye color visible at 10 days when eyes open.

Bew *Blue-Eyed White*
----------vv

Surface color: Pure White
Undercolor: Pure White
Eyes: Bright Blue.
Bews are an interesting color to work with. The vennia gene (vv) that produces the bew is like the rew with one exception. Those that are carriers (Vv) are mismarked, sports, or also called vennia marked (VM). These are bunnies that are, for example a pure black bunny with a white foot, or white nose, sometimes you also get half blue eyes. These are called VM. Those that are out of a bew parent and show non of the white marking are called Vinnea Carriers (VC). To see some VC, VM, and Bews check out the rest of our website

Broken Group

Broken is any color in conjunction with white. The body color is to be evenly disturbed in a patched, spotted, or blanketed patterned. Both breeds require any broken shown, to have color on the nose, around eyes, color ears and a least 10% color. The idea markings are balanced markings on both cheeks. Full eye circles and full colored ears with balanced marking on both sides down the back of the rabbit.

Broken
----------En--

To start off you CAN NOT get a broken out of 2 solids. It is impossible! One parent has to be broken unless it is a rew. A rew can be a broken, masked. Any broken produced out of two so called solids, one of the parents is not a true solid. You can have a broken that appears to the human eye solid be a genetic broken having a broken marking on the body not visible to the eye.
Below is a chart that gives you an ratio of what you would get if you bred a:
Charlie-- A broken that has very few markings (color), usaully less then 10%. ENEN
Self-- is a soild or full color- enen
Broken-- more the 10% color- ENen

Agouti Group
The Agouti group consits of those that have the top side of the body banded and ticked. Banding is a ring pattern in the coat when blow into. Those in the Agouti group have three or more bands of color. Ticked is the tip of the hairs being a different color. The ears are to be laced with the same color as the ticking. There should be (ether white or tan) eye circles, inside of ears, the nape of neck (triangle behind head). Nostrils, underside of jowls, belly and underside of tail should be white or tan also, as the picture shows.
Genetics: The dominant Agouti gene (A) produces the agouti markings of the eye circles, nostril and chin markings. It also produces the ring pattern in the coat, but a rabbit can still have the dominant (A) with out the coat ring pattern if the eye circle, jowl and nostril marking in ether white or tan are present.

Wide Band Group
Bunnies in the wide band group look similar to those in the Agouti group, with the white belly, eyecircles, jowls, bottom of tail, and lacing of ears, the difference is the hair shaft. Instead of multiple bands of color on the shaft a wide band consists of two colors, the top and under color. Sometimes there is a third band when unwanted smut occurs on the tips of the hair.

Genetics: All wide bands carry a dominant "A" giving the agouti apperance, they also carry a double ressesive "ee" which removes the extra banding.
Holland LopAmerican Fuzzy Lop Color at Birth
Genetics: Most people have a hard time distingishing fawns from oranges and Oranges from reds. Their genotype is the same on the scale we are looking at, however there are different modifiers that change the intensity of the rufus coloring. A fawn has less rufus modifers then an orange and a red has more then an orange.
